Are you spoofing - or in Devon is it doddling??

There are few of us of a certain age that haven't leant on the bar of a pub and spoofed. Not you? Well... here's how it works.

Everyone playing (minimum two - no maximum) can hold from zero to three coins in the their hand. Keeping the coins hidden, everyone puts their 'coin' hand on the bar. The game is now to guess what the total number of coins held is.This can range from a 'full house' - the number of people playing multiplied by three - to 'empty' or zero. Each total can only be called by one person, and the winner is the player who gets the score right.

In most schools, the winner of each game drops out until just two are left. The loser of this head-to-head traditionally has to pay for something - but today not usually the round of drinks of old... it's too expensive!

The game is sometimes referred to as 'Doddling', but aficionados insist that this is not the same as Spoofing, the difference being that when Spoofing you can lie in a call (eg call two when you're holding three) while when Doddling you must tell the truth.

Confused? Then come to The Tors in Belstone this Friday (27th) and take part in their charity Spoof Night which is in aid of Devon Air Ambulance. It all starts around 7.30, entrance is £3.00 and there are cash prizes on offer.
