The traditional sights, sounds and smells of Christmas will dominate the centre of Okehampton this Thursday evening when the annual Edwardian Evening takes over the town.

Lights on over 200 Christmas trees, the sound of sleigh bells (albeit recorded!) and the smell of roasting chestnuts will bring the festive spirit to the crowds who will undoubtedly gather both to shop and enjoy the atmosphere.

The town centre will be closed to traffic from 6pm to 9pm, leaving people free to wander without the worry of traffic, and take advantage of the 'cheer' offered by many of the shops, which will be staying open until late.

Phil Martin's excellent hog-roast will be on offer, raising funds for the Christmas lights, the Lions will be roasting the chestnuts and Santa will be escorted by the Round Table.

Okehampton mayor, Dave Weekes, will be hosting a carol service in Red Lion Yard from 7.00pm with the Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band, reminding us all what this festive season is really all about!

West Devon Borough Council's Customer Services team will be bringing their usual Christmas cheer to the Edwardian Evening.

Advisors will be available between 6pm and 8.30pm at the St James Street offices to help residents with all sorts of enquiries, as well as informing them about scores of services they may not even be aware of.

Joining the team during the festivities will be one of the Council's Planning Officers, who will be happy to answer any planning enquiries.

To get into the spirit of the event, light festive fare will be on offer.  There will also be the opportunity for visitors to enter a free draw, with prizes donated by The Fountain Hotel, Martin's Butchers, CP Angling, Julz 4 U, Beanfeast, Donald's Menswear, Waitrose, St James

Street Antiques and In-House.
