Okehampton was dealt yet another blow yesterday when prestige chocolate makers Browne's announced they were closing their factory.

Browne's have been in Okehampton for 18 years
Managers at the firm told staff that the firm had been put into the hands of administrators and told them to go home. The firm, which supplies Harrods, has been been in the town since 1993.
The company made no comment as to why the closure - which cost around 20 jobs - had taken place.
Earlier in the week Robert Wiseman Dairies confirmed that their Okehampton operation will be closing with a loss of 67 jobs, while there has been a deafening silence from Devonshire Desserts, the company set up to take over Polestar, leaving a further 232 jobs at risk.
Tim Jones, chair of Devon and Cornwall Business Council, said: "The community is already reeling and it is quite literally a body blow. The effect will be profound."

It does make you wonder with all the quangos and business advisers within the system and Councils, how easily businesses close down. It is almost like a corner shop turning the sign round from open to closed. Without fibre optic broadband infrastructure I doubt any company of any scale will look at Okehampton or West Devon in general. Conservative Devon County Council are asleep (dreaming of how they can get their Parking Meter Tax through the back-door).
