Come on Okehampton! Here comes a new football season.

It's August - and despite there still being two months of cricket to run, the new football season is nearly upon us. For the town's premier club, it means a change of league and a huge change of travel arrangements.
-
Okehampton Argyle begin the new season at Simmons Park on August 24th v. Penryn.
Reorganisation sees Okehampton Argyle move from Division One East of the South West Peninsula League to Division One West, so instead of trekking east as far as Axminster, the byword for 2010-11 will be 'Go West'! Mousehole, Hayle and Truro are among the more distant opposition, with the nearest 'local' derbies being against Holsworthy and Callington.
The big kick off on Saturday 21st August will be at Simmons Park, however, when the visitors are Penryn Athletic. The following week sees Argyle heading for the sea and surf at Newquay.
The seconds (Devon & Exeter Div 4) and thirds (Devon & Exeter 7) start the season on September 4th. For full details of fixtures and results, visit the Okehampton Argyle website.
Apart from the Okehampton club, the area boasts a full compliment of sides catering for all abilities, who play in various division of the Devon and Exeter League. Traditionally they are all looking for more players, so if you fancy a game either follow the links below (not all clubs have one!) or, better still, go along to a game and have a chat (assuming you like what you see).
Top of the pile are Hatherleigh (D&C Premier & 2nds Div 6)), then Chagford (Div 1 & 2nds Div 6), North Tawton Div 2 & 2nds Div 7), South Zeal (Div 3), Winkleigh Div 3 & 2nds Div 8), and Follygate (Div 7). All the divisions kick off on September 4th.
As last season, I'll spend my Saturday afternoons alternating between Argyle and the Rugby Club and posting a photographic report on the games. Both clubs supply match reports to Okehampton People - and they'll be there for you to read, usually by Monday evening. Results for all the other local sides (where available) will be on the site on Sunday.
This season it would be great to see other clubs posting match reports, and also using the site - as the two main clubs in the town do - to advertise social events. Just click on 'Events' on the home page, and away you go. (You can also use this free facility to promote special fixtures.)
Of course, Okehampton winter sport is not all about football. The Rugby Club are looking to improve on their 4th place in Western Counties West and push for promotion, while the Hockey Club will be hard-pushed to beat last season's 100% record in South Eastern Division 1. (That's another club I'd be pleased to see posting here!)
So enjoy the summer while it's here - but at least there's something to look forward to come the dark, dank days of November.
