Relax with Moor Harmony ….
On 6th October Moor Harmony will be presenting an informal concert in St Mary's, South Zeal at 7.30pm (free admission).
Over the past few years, at our 'birthday' concert on Open Garden's Day it has become custom to learn a new Ave Verum Corpus. No particular reason other than the text and thus the work is relatively short (two to five minutes) and the music, pleasing. So, we had eight under our belt (the Gounod being a wedding favourite) but how long could this crusade into the Ave's continue? After a bit of investigation I've found thirty-eight spanning almost 700 years … that's a lot of birthday concerts!
So, why not get a set learnt in one go and present them on a plate? 700 years certainly does present a great variety of musical styles and we've selected a dozen from the last 400 years to compare and contrast; from 17th century English to 21st century Portuguese. One thing all the settings have in common is that they are (relatively) sedate and peaceful; there is no jarring dissonance or abrupt change in dynamic – hence calling this a relaxing concert. We hope that you can come along to listen just out of interest – most people have heard the Mozart but, the Liszt ? Which Webbe was that? Was that really Lourenco? Shouldn't Rheinberger come with french-fries and the Bordese, a flake ? These, amongst other questions, will be answered on 6th October. We'll provide the candles, you provide something to sip on and we'll all chillax nicely ….
