Imagine a river of lights with hundreds of lanterns of different shapes and sizes shining aloft, as young and old from all over the town come together. The Procession sets off from outside St James Chapel, Fore Street at 6pm with a finale in Simmons Park where there will be singing from the West Devon Folk Choir.
The event is open to all - whether you want to join in the processions, or come along to Simmons Park, or just to watch the spectacle pass by. It's all completely free, thanks to the financial support of the Okehampton United Charity and Devon County Council.
For health and safety reasons, only lanterns made with Wren Music can take part in the procession. Please note that all children of primary school age and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
And now's the time to make your lantern. During the half-term week, from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd February, Wren Music will be running lantern making workshops at Okehampton Rugby Club, Oaklands Park, EX20 1LN. The workshops will be open from 10.00am - 12.30pm, 2.00 - 4.30pm, and from 6.00 - 8.00pm, and Wren Music staff will be on hand to help you make your lantern.
You could make a lantern in about two hours, depending on size and design (and how handy you are!). No experience is necessary and all materials will be provided. Making lanterns is fun, but it can be a bit messy, so don't wear your best clothes for the workshops.
For health and safety reasons, only lanterns made with Wren Music can take part in the procession. Please note that children of primary school age and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times, and at the evening workshops, all under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
