Having heard the disastrous news about the closure of the factory in Okehampton I decided to put up posters for a meeting about a business opportunity in Exeter, which is also advertising for distributors. I gave some to the CAB and the Okement Centre, but was appalled at the attitude of the manager of the post office. They would only take posters if they were for a charity. I told her that this was offering work, a commodity badly needed in Okehampton. She wouldn't take the posters because, as she said 'we don't take anything else because in the end we are just advertising your business.' (And what is wrong with that, I'd like to know.) 'No' I said, 'this is not my business, this is an opportunity for work and for people to start their own business.'
I consider this attitude to be narrow minded and uncharitable. At a time when so many people are losing their livelihoods, this lady, who is comfortable in her position at the post office, while other commercial businesses are worrying about the knock on effect through the loss of the factory, should reconsider her position as manager, and embrace the opportunity of helping her fellow citizens.
