A severe weather warning has been issued for the Westcountry with gales and heavy rain expected to hit the region tomorrow.

Winds could gust up to 70mph with the storm forecast to hit in the early hours.

The Exeter-based Met Office said the high winds would be accompanied by heavy rain which could cause "localised flooding". It issued a severe weather warning for the whole of the country from 3am to 6pm on Tuesday.

"There is a weather system developing over the Atlantic which is going to track across the northern half of the British Isles," forecaster George Goodfellow said yesterday. "It is looking like bringing some very strong winds. There is a chance of severe gale force winds with gusts of 45-55mph quite widely. The worst affected areas could see gusts of 60-70mph for a time. On top of that it will be very wet for a time as well. We had a few of these storms coming in from the Atlantic during December followed by relatively quiet days and this looks like a continuation of that."

The weather warning, the lowest of three on the Met Office system, urges people to "be aware" with travel disruption likely.
