New Okehampton housing and employment development - have your say...

We've read a great deal about the various initiatives to bring more work to Okehampton. Now new areas of the town have been selected for new building - and the population of the town have been invited to join in the planning and design of the sites. Here's what the Strategic Planning Team say:
-
The Okehampton Business Centre still needs business
"Earlier this year, sites were allocated in the West Devon Core Strategy for development in the east of Okehampton and in the south and south-west of Tavistock. These sites will include a mixture of housing and employment development, as well as provide new open space and other facilities that are needed by the community.
We are now inviting people to take part in shaping and designing these sites at Community Design Workshops. Please see the attached invitation for more information about the events.
In order for us to manage attendance, we would be grateful if you could confirm with us whether you would like to come to either of the workshops by Thursday 24th November. However, if you cannot attend, there will be further opportunities to get involved in this work in the future.
We hope you will join us at the events to share your ideas about how the sites can be developed and look forward to seeing you there."

What about the 2nd school you promised us?
Devon county council website 17/04/2008
'Devon invited proposals to run a 420-place primary school for children aged from three to 11 to open in stages with effect from September 2010. 'The school will:
* fulfil an important role in the developing community of Okehampton in partnership with pre-schools, the existing primary school and Okehampton College. It is intended that the school will federate with Okehampton Primary School with a shared governing body and a single executive headteacher
* have a key role to play in delivering extended services either by providing them "in house" or by working with other Children's Trust partners including health, the police, local Children's Centre and the private, voluntary and independent sector
* seek to be an Eco-school and recognise the value of 'the outdoor classroom'.
Big Wide Talk Archive Schools Foundation from Cambridge has submitted a proposal to establish the new school as a Foundation School with a Foundation.
It says the school will:
* be a hub for the best possible teaching and learning, ensuring that each child masters levels of literacy and numeracy within their reach whilst at the same time exploring their unique skills across the curriculum
* work closely with parents first and foremost in the delivery of first-rate education to every child, acknowledging the critical interconnectedness between home, school and patterns of employment
* work in the closest possible partnership with existing local schools so that expertise related to the provision of extended services is shared and that needs are coordinated across the town
* work with local businesses and other organisations to provide exciting and relevant experience for children from birth to early adulthood.
Big Wide Talk provides programmes for children and their parents that cover the extended services requirements to provide parent support and family learning as well as childcare and out of school provision.
