Devon-based author Philip Algar will be at Devon County Council's Library in Okehampton on Wednesday 31st August at 2.00pm to discuss his new book 'Goodbye Old Chap - a life at sea in peace and war'.

The story is based, in part, on diaries kept by Mr Algar's father, Captain Stanley Algar, a captain on an oil tanker, whilst he was in a German prisoner of war camp. Stanley led a remarkable life and the diaries include a graphic and moving account of his liberation and return to England. Philip includes much background information on events and social conditions, giving an insight into a crucial period of history whilst putting his father's life story into a context.

This book will appeal to those interested in one of the most critical periods of the 20th century.

Goodbye Old Chap will be available to buy on the day and royalties from sales of the book are being given to the Red Cross, without whose food parcels Stanley and many other prisoners might have starved.

This event is free of charge. Please contact Okehampton Library on 01837 52805 for further details.
