Police have reported using 'Captor' spray in an incident on Exeter's Cathedral Green yesterday (Monday) involving a violent male suspect.

I hadn't heard of this particular spray, but it seems it is taking the place of CS gas in the subduing of suspects. Although the claim is that it has no side effects, Exeter police are asking that any member of the public present at the incident who is still suffering from the spray should seek medical attention.

Here's the full text of the police statement:

At about 12.40pm on Monday 3rd October 2011 police arrested a man in the Cathedral Green, Exeter who was wanted in connection with a previous assault. During the arrest the man became violent and police used Captor spray and tasers to control the man.

A number of people were on the green at the time of the incident and may have witnessed the incident. Officers are keen to hear from these people and are asking them to contact the police with any information they may have.

Detective Inspector Brett Mitchell said: "There were a lot of people sat enjoying the sun on the green so this was a challenging incident for the officers to deal with and our  primary concern was to protect the public from any harm.  The safest method to detain the suspect was to use Captor spray and then tasers which allowed police to bring the situation under control promptly and allowed us the take the person into custody without anyone suffering a serious injury.  I would like to thank all the members of the public that supported the police during and following this incident."

Unfortunately a number people not connected with this incident have suffered from the side effects of the captor spray as the spray was used in the open air and can affect people as it travels on the wind.  If you have been suffering for any side effects that may include a burning sensation in the eyes and nose and on the skin that do not ease after be short term please seek medical advice.

If you were on the Green this afternoon and you witnessed the incident could you please contact Devon and Cornwall Police on 101 quoting log number 580 of 3rd October.

A 42 year old man is currently at Heavitree Road Police Station awaiting interview following his arrest for assault.

I'm a student living in the Okehampton Area. I was there that lunchtime, and still I'm surprised that the story after so many people witnessing is still wrong from what i saw and from what i can recollect from events that transpired from that day.

The Police used captor spray, or 'pepper spray' after they attempted to use their tazer, which hit the man, but he seemed to just shrug it off. They then attempted to use captor spray to get the man, however missed him and hit a bunch of students.. they only got him to the floor after pretty much jumping on him. Both methods they used failed to work in this case.
